Black Fabric

Black fabric, what comes into your mind upon hearing these words? You might think of gothic music and its patrons with their black eye liners and weird hairstyles. You could

also be thinking of a funeral, or any dark, morbid, and gloomy event. You might even get to think of Marilyn Manson!

Don’t you think it’s just unfair for black fabric to be solely associated with darkness, gloominess, sadness and all else that’s not good? Why not look at the positive things it brings to the table? Have you even considered imagining yourself wearing that little black dress and how much it has made your natural beauty stand out? Or that nice black shirt you donned in that important company presentation that made you look elegant and respectable?

In the world of fashion, design and visual art, black fabric is something most designers can’t be without. Since the time black dresses got free of its exclusive contract of being worn by mourning widows, black textiles have gradually filled the role of being a must have material in every garment and design shop.

Of course, some may feel that black fabric may seem a little bland. Probably, if you are faced with a rim of black textile, you’ll find it boring. The thing is, it isn’t there to be on its own. Its responsibility is to serve as a good background to whatever design you wish to put on it or any accessory you want to wear it with. Whether it is a piece of jewelry or an overcoat, the black cloth will surely make you distinct amongst the crowd.

Black textile is said to give a warm feeling, especially if worn under the sun because black doesn’t allow light to bounce back. Instead, it absorbs all the heat from the sun. It may be a disadvantage to some, but there are ways to avoid soaking in sweat while wearing black clothes. Also, you may choose to leave your black garments in your cabinet during the summer so as not to experience the heat given off by the sun.

Black cloth has also gained popularity thanks to the growing trend of holding weddings that carry a black-and-white theme. From the brides charming black wedding gown or dress up to the trimmings in the reception tables, black cloth serves as part of the memorable event. Some brides prefer to have their gown made out of black material, probably for the sake of changing and deviating from tradition.

Black fabric isn’t only used for dresses and clothes. It is now successful in invading the industry of curtains, beddings, drapes and other household garments. You might be wondering why people would want black in their homes. You might even have the notion that black would just make the surroundings seem tight or small. Black actually gives the illusion of infinity, like there are no walls just like the universe. This is one reason why innovative individuals prefer black to fill their homes. There are even shops that offer customization of black textile, so you could put in your desired design: from abstract, freehand strokes of paint to photos of your family and pets.

The Uses of Blackout Fabric

It is Sunday morning and you can hear the birds chirping. The sun light is streaming down from your windows and hitting you smack on the face. You do not have to get up for

several hours and want to sleep in but you can’t because it is too bright, and you realize that the birds are too noisy. If you have this problem, you should consider using a blackout fabric for your curtains.

Blackout fabric is a type of fabric structure that are fabricated and engineered to be flame retardant, weather-resistant and to withstand natural force. These are usually used in buildings with free-form designs. This is an opaque fabric consisting of a laminate that has an opaque layer between two white exterior layers. This kind of fabric can block out light and heat because it does not allow these to pass through. It also hides dirt, stains, or repairs which can be noticed inside the building or structure.
Blackout fabric is usually placed between two layers of material and has many uses:

• Darkroom – this type of fabric is used for darkroom wall coverings. A darkroom is essential for professional photographers and for people who develop pictures with the use of film. This type of fabric ensures that light does not enter the darkroom, because light can ruin the process of photo developing. For darkroom coverings, you place panels anywhere in the darkroom that has a problem with light, including cracks on the walls, doors and windows.

• Curtains – blackout fabric is usually used for curtains, especially in 5-star hotels. This type of fabric is used to line the drapes. If you plan to use this in your home, simply measure and cut the fabric, then hem the edges and attach it to your curtains. For maximum effect, make sure that it covers your entire window.

• Projection screen – for special movie nights at home, you can have your own movie theater with an LCD projector and simple projection screen. First, make a wooden frame for your projection screen. Measure its dimensions so you know how big your fabric is. You can buy several yards of this kind of fabric from large fabric stores. Staple the fabric to one side of the frame, making sure that it is nice and tight, and then staple the other end. For a more professional look, you can cover the edges with black felt.
